Frequently Asked Questions

Before issuing a support request, please take the time to review our FAQs:

  • How do I preview a song through headphones (Pre-Cueing)?

You can preview songs independently from the mix that goes through the main speakers (aka pre-cueing) using djay’s Split Output mode, which can be enabled in the settings menu in djay for iPad.

All you need is a stereo/mono split cable, and djay will send the master output to the left channel and the cue output to the right channel (which is always the opposite turntable to the one audible through the master channel). You will get a binaural signal for master and pre-cueing, so you will hear sound on both speakers connected to the master channel and in both ears of the headphones connected to the pre-cueing channel.

Where to get a split output adapter

We recommend using the Griffin DJ Cable as a split output adapter for pre-cueing with djay.

  • Does djay for iPad support AirPlay?

Yes, AirPlay support is built right into djay for iPad! Here is how to use AirPlay with djay:

    1. Make sure that your AirPlay station is in the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad.
    2. Open the settings in djay using the “cogwheel” icon.
    3. Tap the AirPlay icon that shows up next to the master volume slider and select your AirPlay station:
    AirPlay in djay for iPad

If the AirPlay icon doesn’t show up next to the master volume slider then djay can’t find your AirPlay station. In this case please confirm that your AirPlay station is in the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad and make sure that AirPlay works in the iPod app.

Note that playing music through AirPlay adds latency to your audio. We recommend using AirPlay with djay’s Automix feature.

  • Does djay for iPad support songs bought from the iTunes Store?

djay for iPad supports all songs nowadays sold on the iTunes Store (called “iTunes Plus”). However, older DRM-protected songs are not supported.

To play older DRM-protected songs please upgrade your existing songs to iTunes Plus in the iTunes Store.

  • How can I export recorded mixes to my computer?

    1. Connect iPad to your Mac or PC.
    2. Select your iPad from the Devices section on the left side of iTunes.

  • How can I search the library?

Library searching is currently only available in djay’s full-screen library. You can enable the full-screen library in djay’s settings menu (below the recording button) under Settings > Library.

  • How can I see the BPM value for my songs in the library?

Browsing by BPM is only available in djay’s full-screen library. You can enable the full-screen library in djay’s settings menu (below the recording button) under Settings > Library.

Note that the BPM value is only available if you previously loaded a song in djay.

  • How does iCloud syncing work with djay?

Cue points and other metadata generated while using djay on your iPhone are automatically synced via iCloud. This includes cue points and manually altered BPM info (tapped/half/double) per song. Other metadata like BPM analysis is currently not synced.

To enable iCloud syncing do the following:

    1. Enable iCloud with the same Apple ID on all your devices (iPad/iPhone/Mac).
    2. Enable “Documents & Data” in the iCloud settings on all your devices.
    3. Make sure you are using the same iTunes library on all your devices (partial libraries work too, e.g. syncing individual playlists to your iPhone/iPad).

To test iCloud syncing do the following:

    1. Load a song on your iPad and set a start point (using the cue point buttons next to the play button).
    2. Lock the screen or exit djay to trigger synchronization with the cloud.
(For djay on a Mac, please instead load another song on the same turntable to make djay write the cue point to the cloud.)
    3. Load the same song on your other device. It should have the cue point set at the same location as on your iPad.

Finally please make sure all your devices are connected to the Internet.

Note: iCloud syncing on the Mac is only available if you bought djay through the Mac App Store.

  • How do I use audio copy & paste with djay?

Audio copy & paste lets you share audio between djay and other music apps on your iPad:

    • To load sounds from other music apps onto the turntables in djay:
      1. Copy audio from another app on your device.
      2. Launch djay and tap-and-hold the load button until a menu appears.
      3. Select “Paste”.
    • To copy a recording made with djay to use in other apps:
      1. Open the recording panel in djay.
      2. Tap-and-hold the recording you want to copy until a menu appears.
      3. Select “Copy”.

Please see this list of apps supporting audio copy & paste to find out which of your other apps can be used to share audio with djay.

  • Can I use AirPlay together with the iPad’s built-in output for pre-cueing?

Unfortunately this is not possible, as iOS doesn’t allow using AirPlay in combination with the iPad’s built-in audio output.

  • I get an error saying my tracks are DRM-protected, but I am certain they are not

If you get the error “DRM protected tracks can not be accessed” even for songs that are not DRM-protected, please make sure that you have the latest version of iOS by clicking “Check for Update” after selecting your iPad in iTunes.

If you are a developer and are using a pre-release build of iOS you need to install the iOS golden master.

  • Why does pre-cueing not work with my split-output adapter?

Please open the iPad’s Settings app, select General > Accessibility, and make sure “Mono Audio” is disabled (OFF position).

  • I cannot install djay on my iPad — what should I do?

Please make sure you have the latest iOS system version installed on your iPad:

    1. Connect iPad to your Mac or PC.
    2. Select your iPad from the Devices section on the left side of iTunes.
    3. Click the “Check for Update” button and follow the onscreen instructions

djay for iPad requires iOS 4.2.1 or higher.

  • How do I reset the cue point I set on a song?

Hold the SET cue point button until the cue point disappears.

  • How do I prevent keyboard typing sounds when searching the library?

If you enable the Ring/Silent switch next to the volume controls on your iPad, all audio other than djay’s audio output will be silenced. This prevents any audio feedback from push notifications, keyboard typing, etc.

This is our recommended setting when playing live.

  • How can I invert the speed slider so it works like on a real turntable?

You can invert the speed slider (pitch) in djay’s settings menu (below the recording button) under Settings > Speed Sliders.
